Oru Murai: Revitalizing the Classic Through Contemporary Video Production
Oru Murai is a composition by Ashwin Hiran, offering a contemporary rendition of a classic Malayalam movie song that has embedded itself in pop culture. The music video, directed by capturing the traditional dance form Bharatanatyam, presents it with a blend of contemporary art direction and cinematography. The story metaphorically symbolizes a journey back to childhood, where one becomes captivated by innocence, unable to escape its charm.
My Role :
Director :
As a director, I crafted the framework for the entire music video and provided briefings to contributors, including the DOP, Production Designer, Makeup and Costume, and Editor, to create the final video with their inputs. I also conducted multiple sessions with the actors to ensure proper staging for the frames during shooting.
Writer:
I wrote the story by drawing inspiration from the music, the lyrics of the song, and the perception the music has created in pop culture. As it revolves around an inner journey of a person looking backward into the past, I aimed to capture the fantasy of someone revisiting their childhood.
Co-producer :
To transform an idea into a project, it requires extensive organization and facilitating collaboration. Given the constraints of a tight production budget, we sought collaborators willing to partner with us at minimal cost. Additionally, I managed the planning logistics, conducted location reconnaissance, and organized the entire shoot.
Solution:
The video underwent multiple rounds of editing and color correction. The final output received widespread acceptance across social media channels, garnering shares and eliciting constructive criticism from viewers. This engagement not only affirmed the project's success but also provided valuable insights for future improvements.
