Navigating the Future: The Gojek Transport Makeover

This is an excellent example of how new technology can inspire fresh design directions and product experiences. The design and UX engineering teams have been experimenting with integrating 3D animated elements into the product to enhance the booking experience. After multiple rounds of prototyping and testing new approaches, we have crafted a lasting and unique experience to transport design.

Approach:

As we aim to create distinctive vehicles, our goal is to design them in a way that resonates with Gojek's identity. Additionally, this project serves as the foundation for all future 3D elements the brand may utilize. Through iterations and testing various directions, we finalized the design by evaluating its functionality, alignment with the brand's personality, and its role as a unique visual identity for Gojek.

My Role :

  • Developing design framework :

While closely collaborating with the engineering team to implement three-dimensional movements aligned with the orientation of the moving vehicle, we initiated the process of crafting a uniquely designed vehicle fleet for Gojek. Beginning with the exploration of multiple sketches and experimenting with various styles through quick prototyping, we settled on a basic framework based on scalability, distinctiveness, and legibility.

  • Creative direction :

This project was truly an experimental one, as we were trying new tools and technology for the first time. During exploration, we encountered numerous challenges in the design forms and implementing them in the product. I coordinated with stakeholders, including marketing and product teams, justifying the need for such advanced methods with the help of researchers. Collaborating with designers, 3D artists, and engineers, we worked as a team to achieve the project's objectives.

  • Coordinating with project and engineering :

Once we cracked this project, we knew it would open up new opportunities for product experiences in the future. Collaborating with the engineering team, we explored possibilities of animating 3D objects natively. We attempted to use OBJ and FBX formats directly in the product but encountered issues rendering textures, lighting, and other details. Ultimately, we opted for PNG sprites that could be animated according to the vehicle movements.

Solution:

The 3D fleet project revolutionized our product experience and propelled us into learning new technologies, unlocking fresh opportunities for the future. Collaborating closely with the engineering team, we explored native 3D animation possibilities, gaining valuable insights that will shape innovative product experiences for Gojek.

The integration of new tools and technology has elevated the product experience, ushering in a dynamic and innovative era for Gojek.
